Every PPF fitter hits the same handful of problems. Film that won't sit flat, silvery lines that won't squeegee out, little bubbles, and edges that lift the moment you turn your back. The good news is that almost all of them come down to technique, and once you know what's causing them, they're quick to fix.
Here are the four we see most often, and how to sort each one.
1. Fingers that won't go down
Fingers are the raised ridges you get when excess film gathers on a curved panel.
The fix is stretch. Pre-cut patterns are designed to allow for the film to stretch, turning a flat 2D piece into a 3D shape that conforms to the panel. Push the film right out to the edges of the panel to get the most stretch, and the finger disappears. Use tack solution to hold a corner in place first, then stretch away from it. That combination is the quickest way to a flat panel.
2. Silvering lines
Silvering lines usually mean slip solution has got into an area you've already tacked. The two don't mix.
- Always push slip away from tacked areas, never towards them.
- If slip does get in, peel the film back, re-lubricate with slip and lay it down again.
- When you've tacked more than one side, leave yourself a slip channel so the moisture has somewhere to escape without crossing a tacked section.
3. Bubbles under the film
Small bubbles are normally a squeegee issue. Keep slip solution on top of the film so the squeegee glides, then work in long, overlapping strokes with moderate pressure. Don't push as hard as you would with vinyl wrap. Too much force or short, choppy strokes are what leave bubbles behind.
4. Edges that keep lifting
Big panels like bonnets and wings go down quickly. It's the edges that take the time.

Come back to it
You don't have to finish one panel before starting the next. Squeegee the moisture out towards the edges, spray the adhesive side of the wrap-around sections with tack, then move on and let it dry. When you come back, the film is tacky and ready to fold over for good.
Use a little heat
In a hurry? A heat gun on a low setting does the same job faster. Warm the film gently, then wrap the edge with your squeegee.
Use your microfibre
A lint-free microfibre lets you dry the edges without leaving fibres under the film. Squeegeeing upwards? Wrap the squeegee in the cloth and hold it at the top of each stroke so it soaks up the moisture before it runs back down.
Get your solutions right first
A lot of these problems start in the spray bottle. Our slip solution is baby-shampoo based, so it leaves nothing behind to contaminate the install. You only need about half a cap (3 to 4 drops) per 500ml of water. Tack is 99.9% isopropyl alcohol and water at a 1 to 5 ratio, so 100ml of concentrate to 500ml of water. Too soapy? Empty the bottle, refill with plain water and spray over the area to dilute it. You'll find both concentrates, plus squeegees and microfibres, in our application accessories and the full application kit.
The bottom line
Fingers, silvering, bubbles and lifting edges all have simple causes. Stretch the film, keep slip out of tacked areas, squeegee with long overlapping strokes and give your edges time or a little heat. Get those habits right and every install gets quicker and cleaner.
Want to master these techniques hands-on? Our one-day PRO PPF Training Academy runs at our Sheffield unit with a maximum of 4 students, so you'll get plenty of time on the film with a trainer beside you. Register your interest and we'll be in touch to talk through dates and options.
